Warren's body quivered at the sound of Adam's voice, and he didn't have to turn around to realize they'd been flanked. Feigning composure, Warren turned around to see Adam hovering just a few feet behind him. He moved quietly for such a large man, which unnerved Warren all the more.
Adam grinned and crossed his colossal arms. His room was supposed to be locked at night; that lock, too, was probably tampered with. While Warren was rethinking Dr. Silverstein's culpability in the officer's murder, he did know one thing for sureâAdam had left the lab that night and run toward the area where the officer was killed. Warren couldn't take chances with him.
âAdam!â Warren opened his arms, working his best smile. He flashed a look at Steve he surely wouldn't miss. Even with Steve there, they still might need help getting this gorilla back into his cage. Adam had bulked up considerably since coming to life, his arms bulging with muscles. He continued his menacing glare at them. âGreat to see you, pal. How are you feeling?â Warren smacked his shoulder; it was like whacking a marble statue.
âNever better.â His speech wasn't slow and deliberate anymore, and his eyes were vibrant and piercing, boring through Warren. His expression spoke more than his words ever could.
He knew.
âAdam, what are you doing out of your room?â Dr. Silverstein stepped back. âYou're not supposed to be on the floor at night.â
âTo correct you, Doctor, I'm not supposed to be here at all. But I have you and the illustrious Warren H. Finstead to thank for that.â
âWhatâ¦what has happened to you?â Dr. Silverstein cocked his head back.
Steve sidestepped and used his elbow to ease his jacket over his pistol. Warren heard the leather snap as Steve raised his gun to eye level.
Smack! The pistol sailed across the room and crashed into the wall thirty feet away. Adam slapped it so quickly Warren barely saw his hand move.
Steve's arm whipped around his body, spinning him in a semicircle. He balanced himself and lobbed a haymaker toward Adams head.
Adam caught his fist and pushed it aside, then rapid-punched Steve twice in the face, once in the stomach, and followed up with a kick to the sternum that launched him through the air and onto his back, crashing him into the wall. Steve didn't move.
Adam glanced at Steve's crumpled body, then lurched toward Warren and Dr. Silverstein. Maybe they could make it to the rear door? Adam could outrun them both with ease. It was best to talk him down and get him corralled somehow.
âAdam.â Warren said slowly. He fought to not let Adam see his fear, but it had to be obvious. He raised his trembling finger to Adam's face as he eased closer. âYou need to calm down and get ahold of yourself.â
âYou fool.â Adam's hands curled into vibrating fists. âYou don't need to speak to me like I'm some kind of imbecile. You would be shocked by what I know, what I've seen.â
âAdam, you must listen to Mr.
